FORT LEONARD WOOD, Mo. — On Tuesday, we will celebrate our nation’s 247th birthday and commemorate the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Leaders, before the long weekend, talk to your teammates about their plans, prioritizing safety and managing risks.

Fireworks are not authorized on Fort Leonard Wood. If you are using fireworks off post, obey state and local laws, ordinances and regulations; read the instructions before use; and maintain safe distance. Keep a fire extinguisher on hand and never attempt to relight a “dud.” Firearm owners must remember the fundamentals of handling a weapon and store all weapons not in use either in a safe, a locked case or with a trigger lock engaged. Never handle fireworks or weapons while under the influence.

If you are operating motorcycles, or recreational or utility vehicles, ensure proper training and use protective safety equipment. If you are operating watercraft, ensure you are licensed; wear a flotation device; and follow all laws and regulations. Have a plan for water sports. Know your ability to swim; never swim alone; and tell others your plans and location. When traveling, get adequate rest; wear a seat belt; and drive without distraction. Plan and adjust for weather and never drive on roads that are under water.

As summer temperatures and humidity remain high, be cognizant of the level and duration of outdoor activity; remain hydrated; wear sunscreen; and have a plan to cool off afterward. Never leave children or pets unattended, even with the windows open or the air conditioning on.

We are proud to serve with you and look forward to seeing you at 4 p.m. July 4 on Gammon Field for Fort Leonard Wood’s Independence Day Celebration!
