ROSE BARRACKS, Germany – Celebrating its 75th anniversary, Maintenance Activity Vilseck reflected on its history and invited people, especially junior employees, to become a part of the company.

MAV celebrated its 75th anniversary June 10 together with family and friends. Eventgoers could enjoy German and American cuisine, a jumping castle and music and could see the different machinery on display.

The MAV is a civilian repair facility for military equipment located at Rose Barracks, Germany, which started out as a military unit in 1948.

During the last decades, the company went through some major changes. Until 2007, the MAV was under military command of the 7th Army Training Command. It is now under civilian management of the Theater Logistics Support Center – Europe. The majority of the 148 employees are local nationals.

"We are 99.9% German civilian employees and one Department of the Army Civilian," said Hans Jürgen Pirner, head of service and director of MAV.

Starting to work for MAV in 1983, Pirner knows about the career opportunities available at MAV. “I started here as an automotive mechatronics technician, and now I am the director of MAV,” he said.

“We are always striving to create training opportunities for our employees,” said Pirner. “About 65% of former trainees are already in management positions.”

The support and encouragement do not end after the successful completion of an apprenticeship. Junior employees are encouraged to develop the skills needed for management positions during their time at MAV. An important part of working at MAV is the communication with customers.

“Therefore, we encourage all of our employees to study English,” said Pirner. “And all technical instructions and reference books are available exclusively in English as well.”

MAV has been offering apprenticeships in technical and administrative positions since 1998. These include occupations of automotive mechatronics technician, industrial mechanic and office administrator.

“I wanted to do an apprenticeship in the business field and was eager to incorporate my interest in English in my career path,” said Daniel Rühr, first year office administrator trainee. “And I like working here because of the positive work environment. This is like a family.”
