The Detroit Arsenal observed the 248th Army Birthday today with a cake cutting ceremony.

The observance was officiated by our Army Community Services Division Chief, Jenny Downey and was attended by Detroit Arsenal senior leaders and many members of the workforce.

Maj. Gen. Darren Werner, Senior Commander Detroit Arsenal addressed the audience with a message of gratitude for the thousands and thousands of men and women who serve or have served and their families.

“The army was established in 1775, our soldiers and civilians have confidently supported our nation -bearing true faith and allegiance to the US constitution,” said Werner. “Whenever the nation needed us over the past 248 years the US Army answers the call, and it will never change.”

The Army shares this day with America’s flag. Flag Day is important said Werner - those in uniform carry the flag everywhere we go. Werner stated he wears it on his right shoulder and the flag represents what you believe is America. There’s a correlation between America’s soldiers and America’s flag. We use it to represent the greatness of our country.

The ceremony concluded with the children from our Child Development Center’s Strong Beginnings class singing Happy Birthday to the Army before the traditional cake cutting. The oldest and youngest Soldier on the installation proceeded to cut the cake with a sword.

The US Army was formed by the Second Continental Congress June 14, 1775. June 14 is also Flag Day, when the 13 colonies united under the flag of the United States in 1777. The Army’s greatest assets are our people, so on June 14 we celebrate our Soldiers, civilians, retirees, and their families as well as our flag.

The event was sponsored by the Selfridge Base Community Council and the Home Bakery of Rochester.
