JBSA Ft. Sam Houston, TX. – JBSA HQMEDCOM conducted an Active Shooter Exercise this week. Active shootings are more and more common, with this miserable reality we have to properly prepare ourselves.

Even on a military installation, people may think that we are automatically trained for these types of situations. Right? Wrong! The point was stressed that we have to be prepared for the shooter to look just like us. Maybe even in uniform.

Exercise: On the morning of 23 March 2023 at approximately 0900 a disgruntled Department of the Army Civilian enters building 2264 and begins shooting everyone he encounters. The shooter proceeds through the cubicle area, then departs the facility through the opposite door.
The OTSG/MEDCOM Mission Assurance and Protection, G-34 hosted the exercise, with the approval of CPT Kevin Maynes, the commander of OTSG/MEDCOM HHC.. Zoe Owen, FBI special agent presented training on the FBI’s Behavioral Analysis Unit, she was accompanied by FBI special agents Kevin McKenna and Sam Ukeiley. MAJ Nicholas Studer, a physician with the U.S. Army Institute of Surgical Research presented Stop the Bleed training to everyone.

There are three immediate steps that were stressed throughout the training. The steps are different ways to protect oneself during an active shooter situation. Run-Hide-Fight!

RUN
First and foremost, run. If you can get out of harm’s way, do so and act quietly and swiftly. Help encourage others to move with you, but don’t let them slow you down.

HIDE
If you don’t have access to an immediate exit, hide. Barricade yourself if you can. Form a completely enclosed barrier that will protect you from the shooter and the shooter’s weapon. Silence your phone and stay as quiet as you can until you are given a signal that everything is all clear.

FIGHT
If you can’t find an exit or there is nowhere for you to take cover, fight. Do everything you can to protect yourself and those around you. The shooter has already threatened your well-being, by putting you in this situation. Don’t be afraid to threaten theirs.

“Everyone should always be prepared for any situation. They cannot be stuck in the mindset that something like this will never happen to them.” ” said Mr. Carlton T. Bray, Antiterrorism and Insider Threat Program Manager, (ATC).
