JOINT BASE LEWIS-MCCHORD, Wash. (June 1, 2023) - Lt. Gen. Xavier Brunson, commanding general of America’s First Corps, awarded several Soldiers and civilians with Military Intelligence Corps Association Awards (MICA awards) on May 23.

Brunson, the guest speaker for the event and senior most Knowlton award holder on JBLM, awarded fifteen Soldiers the Knowlton award and two civilians with the Golden Rose to recognize their outstanding achievements within the military intelligence community and dedication toward safeguarding the nation.

The Military Intelligence community, past and present, use the MICA awards to recognize individuals who have contributed significantly to the Military Intelligence Corps through their actions, standards of integrity and moral character, professional competence, and service.

“This award embodies more than just an accolade,” said Brunson. “It serves as a source of inspiration for all intelligence professionals. Congratulations to the recipients of the Military Intelligence Association Award. Your exceptional achievements serve as an inspiration to us all and reinforce our conviction that intelligence truly is the cornerstone of our military's success.”

Awardees are from units across JBLM. The majority are assigned to 201st Expeditionary Military Intelligence Brigade and it's subordinate battalion the 502d Intelligence and Electronic Warfare (IEW) Battalion.

“The 201st EMIB was the first EMIB in the Army to undergo the most recent force design update in October of 2021,” said Brunson. “With this transformation, the 502d Intelligence and Electronic Warfare Battalion became the first IEW battalion in the Army’s inventory. As a result, over the past two years, the 201st EMIB has been at the forefront of the Intelligence Warfighting Function’s transition to support large-scale combat operations.”

Over the last two years, elements of the Brigade have supported I Corps operations west of the International Date Line providing intelligence collection capabilities across the Indo-Pacific region.

The Brigade recently participated in Warfighting Exercise 23-01, the first time that an EMIB has ever participated as a training audience. As a result, elements of the Brigade have spent many months at the newly renamed Fort Cavazos, supporting III Armored Corps’ Command Post Exercises and Warfighting Exercise 23-4, providing lessons learned and shaping emerging doctrine for future operations.

“We are in an era characterized by complex and dynamic security challenges,” said Brunson. “In the Pacific for example, military intelligence is instrumental in assessing and monitoring the ever-evolving security landscape. It allows us to gain insights into potential threats, including the rise of non-state actors, territorial disputes, nuclear proliferation, and the rapid development of advanced military capabilities."

"Our intelligence assets and personnel provide us with critical information about the intentions, capabilities, and vulnerabilities of our adversaries," said Brunson. "The value of intelligence cannot be overstated.”
