FORT HUACHUCA, Ariz. – Robert Brooks, a cybersecurity engineer and security control assessor for U.S. Army Information Systems Engineering Command (ISEC), has earned a Black Engineers of the Year Award (BEYA) in the Modern-Day Technology Leaders category.

Brooks started working for ISEC in 2015 after retiring from the U.S. Army. He served most of his career as a special operations communicator.

“I didn’t know much about the organization at the time, however I was willing to learn whatever was needed in order to be successful and accomplish the mission…My government career has gone very well,” said Brooks.

Brooks has worked on several “very fulfilling” projects for the Army. He was able to assist the Army with the telework solution during the pandemic by increasing the number of Microsoft TEAMS users from 200,000 to almost 2 million.

As an employee of ISEC, Brooks has traveled all over the world conducting cybersecurity related tasks. He’s worked with several agencies, including the Defense Information Systems Agency, U.S. Air Force, U.S. Navy, and National Security Agency. He’s also worked with technology companies like Microsoft, IBM and AT&T as well.

For anyone interested in pursuing a career as an Army civilian, Brooks says that it’s a great chance to be part of an “ever evolving, fast paced, goal oriented organization that offers the best opportunities for the development of emerging technologies.”

Tenacious and driven

ISEC is a major subordinate of the U.S. Army Communications-Electronics Command.

Cyber Security Group Leader Deborah Harvey at ISEC says Brooks always goes “above and beyond” when accomplishing a task.

“If I say ‘Robert, I need you to do this, this, and that,’ I know that [he] will accomplish that mission/task. This characteristic is what made my job so easy to recommend him for the BEYA award,” said Harvey.

When COVID started, Brooks worked tirelessly to overcome many obstacles to ensure the workforce had tools to communicate while working remotely. “His tenacity and drive assisted many,” Harvey said. “He doesn’t take ‘no’ for an answer.”
