TOWER BARRACKS, Germany – Because April is Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month and Alcohol Awareness Month, U.S. Army Garrison Bavaria’s Sexual Harassment/Assault Response Prevention program and the Army Substance Abuse Program co-hosted 5K Buddy Runs for Awareness at four locations across USAG Bavaria.

Buddy runs were held at Tower Barracks, Rose Barracks, the Joint Multinational Readiness Center, and the Garmisch-Partenkirchen Community. More than 1,500 Soldiers and Family members participated, according to event organizers.

“Thank you all for coming out and designating a day of PT to commemorate and recognize our continuous need and effort to battle sexual assault and substance abuse,” said Col. Kevin Poole, commander of USAG Bavaria. “Events like the Buddy Run are a great opportunity to remind our military community and partners of resources and services available to them.”

The theme for Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month is "Intervene, We are a Team: There is an US in Trust, can they trust you?" and the theme for Alcohol Awareness month is "Own Your Limits."

“It’s always great when our SHARP and ASAP teams can partner together to host events; they go hand-in-hand as many SHARP cases involve alcohol,” said Matthew Murcin, USAG Bavaria’s ASAP program manager.

During the month of April, the SHARP and ASAP teams worked together to host several events in all four communities. These events involved community campaigns and tabling events, where they held discussions with the public about the importance of intervening, responsible drinking, and common misconceptions about alcohol consumption.
