WHITE SANDS MISSILE RANGE, N.M. (May 2, 2023) - Month of the Military Child occurs every April. "Taking Care of Our Military Children" is the theme this year. It is an opportunity to focus on the lives of military children, youth, and teens. The U.S. Army Garrison White Sands Missile Range's Family and Morale, Welfare, and Recreation Programs had an event to celebrate the children on April 28.

"The Month of the Military Child Celebration held on April 28 was to show support and celebrate our military children and youth for their service, commitment, and sacrifice," said Reina Marquez, Outreach Services Director for Child & Youth Services.

The event was held at the Youth Center with indoor and outdoor activities. There was food and snacks for everyone in attendance. Crafts, balloon animals, and multiple giant jumping balloons entertained the kids.

April, the month of the military child, was started in 1986 by former Defense Secretary Casper Weinberger, who realized that military children were making were not honored or recognized for their sacrifices.

During April, there were a few days to "purple up," which means to dress in purple. Purple combines each branch's colors into one: the Air Force, Navy, and Coast Guard all use shades of blue, the Army uses green, and the Marines use red.
