ABERDEEN PROVING GROUND, Md. – APG personnel had the opportunity to learn about the latest innovations and network with vendors during the Tech Expo at Top of the Bay Nov. 2.

This was the first time the Tech Expo was held on the installation since the COVID-19 pandemic. Federal Direct Access Expositions hosted the event; more than 200 people attended and 49 companies were present.

FDAE account manager Matt Flemister said they were glad to return to APG.

“It’s great to be back hosting it, to bring all the latest capabilities to the installation,” he said. “[We feature] a good range of technology and IT [information technology] solutions so they [APG personnel] can do their job better.”

Networking opportunities

Flemister said to comply with COVID-19 protocols, the number of vendors was reduced. According to Flemister, the event is popular with vendors because it gives them the chance to have face-to-face interaction with potential customers.

“It’s a good opportunity [for attendees] to see a range of technology; you are going to get anything from hardware, computer systems to storage systems,” he said. “It’s also an opportunity [for attendees] to ask vendors questions in person.”

Marissa Register, with Eastern Tech Corporation, gave attendees product information sheets and showed them samples from the company’s product lines. Eastern Tech Corporation sells electronic, microwave and electro-mechanical devices throughout Maryland, Washington D.C. and Virginia.

“[The tech expo] gets our name out there, when the engineers are working on designs, they keep our literature and have our line card [a list of products the company offers],” she said.

Finding solutions

Preven Harris, an electrical engineer with the U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command’s C5ISR Center, attended to check out the latest technology and upgrades to existing models.

“We have stuff [equipment] that is outdated, needs to be upgraded, so this is a good way to see what is out there and what we can upgrade,” he said. “And different types of solutions that are available to us.”

John Aller, a sales manager with Getac, showed Harris a rugged laptop during the show. Getac is a commercial off-the-shelf manufacturer of tactical end-user devices for the Department of Defense ranging from tablets, notebooks and servers.

“We have been supporting the APG community for a number of years now,” he said. “They are good customers of ours.”
