PICATINNY ARSENAL, N.J. - U.S. Army Garrison Picatinny Arsenal leadership signed three different proclamations during an all-hands meeting in the Lindner Conference Center on April 5. Lt. Col. Alexander Burgos, garrison commander, and Command Sgt. Maj. Terry L. Anderson Jr., garrison command sergeant major, signed agreements in support of Child Abuse Prevention Month, Month of the Military Child, and Sexual Assault and Awareness Month.
Child Abuse Prevention Month is recognized nationally during the month of April. The purpose of the monthly theme is to raise awareness to the community that it is everyone’s responsibility to know the signs and symptoms of child abuse and neglect as a way of prevention.
The Month of the Military Child observance recognizes and honors the role military children play in the armed forces community. This year’s observance has the theme, “Military Children and Youth: Honoring the Past, Treasuring the Present, and Shaping the Future.” Since April 1986, the U.S. Army has observed the Month of the Military Child to recognize the support that military children provide their Soldiers and families.
Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month (SAAPM) is recognized in April by both civilian and military communities. The Department of Defense observes SAAPM by focusing on creating the appropriate culture to eliminate sexual assault, and by requiring a personal commitment from all Service members to act to prevent sexual assault.
