WHEELER ARMY AIRFIELD, Hawaii -- Representatives from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Honolulu District, U.S. Army Garrison Hawaii, 25th Infantry Division Combat Aviation Brigade, and contractor Kiewit gathered here, March 29, for a traditional Hawaiian groundbreaking and blessing to kick-off construction of Phase 2 of the rotary wing parking apron project.

“Ground breakings are a great reason to come together, kick-off construction and celebrate our partnerships,” said Lt. Col. Ryan Pevey, commander, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Honolulu District. “As part of the military ohana in Hawaii and throughout the Pacific we rely heavily on our partners and the relationships we’ve built at every level, to accomplish our mission – to develop the best reputation in (the Corps of Engineers) and become the construction agent of choice in the Pacific.”

The $54.5 million project will construct an additional 29 parking positions, associated helipads and several taxiways completing the taxiway network at Wheeler Army Airfield.

The milestone marks another step forward on this multi-year project that is vital to the modernization of the Army in Hawaii. The apron will support the 25th Infantry Division Combat Aviation Brigade's 2-6th Cavalry Squadron, 2-25th Aviation Battalion, and the 209th Aviation Support Battalion.
