FORT LEONARD WOOD, Mo. — National Vietnam War Veterans Day is celebrated every year on March 29, which commemorates the day — 50 years ago, in 1973 — when the U.S. military ended its combat operations in Vietnam.
Over the course of the nearly 20 years of the Vietnam War, more than nine million Americans demonstrated their bravery and commitment to this nation through military service, including 58,000 who were killed in action — their names are etched in the Memorial Wall at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C.
While we honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice — along with those who were wounded, taken prisoner or who remain missing and unaccounted for — we also acknowledge the sacrifices and thank the families of our Vietnam veterans, who took on extra responsibilities at home, and endured grief and periods of uncertainty and stress.
Many of our community members, civilian employees, retirees and family members here served in Vietnam. If you know someone who served, we encourage you to reach out and express our appreciation for them and their continued support to our great nation.
We are proud to serve with you!
