ULJIN, SOUTH KOREA - Soldiers with 19th Sustainment Command (Expeditionary), 501st Sustainment Brigade and their family members had a chance to experience the 8th Uljin Snow Crab Festival in Hupo Harbor, Uljingun, April 6 to 8.
Each quarter Soldiers from the Sergeant Audie Murphy Club volunteer as assist teachers for the English Classes in Uljin elementary, middle and high schools. This quarter their visit coincided during the festival dates.
The city of Uljin is a tourist attraction located on the shore of the East Sea in South Korea. The cities most popular festivals include the Snow Crab Festival in the spring and the Pine Tree Mushroom Festival in the fall.
Uljin's long history of crab-catching and their ability to catch a large amount per year makes this city famous throughout Korea for their snow crab, said Mr. Kim, Sang Yun, media relations, 19th ESC.
The goal of The Uljin Snow Crab Festival is to promote Uljin's local culture, connect citizens through local marine businesses and boost their economy by advertising their highly demanded and valued snow crab.
Activities during the festival included plenty of traditional Korean food and Uljin snow crab to eat, games, boat races, crab-catching contests, crab eating as well as tasting contests and a Gimbab (Korean-style sushi) making contest.
The participants involved in the Gimbab making contest broke The Guinness Book of World Records for longest Gimbab, which measured to be 80 meters in length.
Participants of the Gimbab contest included Brig. Gen. Raymond V. Mason, commanding general, 19th ESC, Sgt. 1st Class Dean M. Farr, support operations, 19th ESC, Command Sgt. Maj. David R. Abbott, command sergeant major, 501st Special Troops Battalion, and Sgt. James M. Bateman, transportation, 19th ESC.
The Gimbab was given to participants and visitors for free so everyone got a chance to have a small piece of this event.
The snow crab festival is held every year in April.
