FORT LEE, Va. – The Army Logistics University March Madness event is not what the name indicates, but an occasion full of lightheartedness, spirt, teamwork and goodwill.

It certainly does not have the competitive edge relative to its college basketball tournament namesake.

Yet, it’s a good play on words to describe a few hours in which community members – through the conduit of sports -- learn about ALU’s International Student Military Office, its mission and its need for community support in the form of sponsorships.

Donna Wells, the IMSO chief, said as much afterward about the event– officially, the ALU March Madness Sports Extravaganza – adding this year’s occasion went just as well as the inaugural event last year.

“Everything went great,” she said, noting 300 people were on hand at the ALU quad for soccer, basketball and volleyball tournaments. “It was a phenomenal event. We had good participation from the schools, and the international students were excited and said they really enjoyed it.”

All CASCOM components here – the Ordnance, Quartermaster and Transportation schools – had a participatory hand in the events as well as ALU students, faculty and staff.

Also on hand were Sydney A. Smith, ALU president; Col. Gregory K. Gibbons, ALU Commandant; Command Sgt. Maj. Marissa Cisneros, senior enlisted advisor and commandant, Logistics Noncommissioned Officer Academy.

IMSO, which hosts roughly 180 students from 42 partner nations, relies heavily on sponsorship programs. They contribute to the effort of returning students to homelands with “an understanding of the responsibilities of governments, militaries and citizens to protect, preserve and respect the rights of ever individual,” according to the U.S. Army Combined Arms center website.

Participating sponsors provide culturally immersive activities for students such as family or restaurant dinner outings, visits to local and regional attractions.

Community members age 18 and older are eligible for IMSO sponsorship. There is a screening process associated with the program. Participation is voluntary, and there is no reimbursement of costs associated with sponsorship activities.

IMSO also is planning to host an open house featuring country booths, food tasting and entertainment at the quad April. Visit www.Facebook.com/armyfortlee for dates and times.
