WHITE SANDS MISSILE RANGE, N.M. (Mar. 19, 2023) White Sands Missile Range Commander Brig. Gen. Eric D. Little and White Sands Missile Range Command Sgt. Maj. Jose G. Melendez held a closing ceremony at the Frontier Club on post honoring the 4,000 people who participated in the 34th Annual Bataan Memorial Death March.
This event brought together Veterans, Soldiers, and civilians from all over the world to honor the heroic service members who defended the Philippine Islands during World War II. Together they marched through the high desert of New Mexico, celebrating the Army’s message of being all you can be.
“Thank you to our participants, sponsors, and volunteers. Please take your experiences and stories from today back with you and share them with your friends and family,” Melendez said.
Awards were presented to the fastest teams and marcher. Sgt. Maj. Billy Atkinson completed with the fastest time for the long-distance route at three hours, five minutes, and 41 seconds. Atkinson works at the Noncommissioned Officer Leadership Center of Excellence at Fort Bliss and is an active-duty Soldier.
