Over 4,000 people participated in the 34th Annual Bataan Memorial Death March which was held live and in person for the first time in three years March 19 at White Sands Missile Range.

The event honors a special group of World War II heroes who were responsible for the defense of the islands of Luzon, Corregidor, and the harbor defense forts of the Philippines.

Among those in attendance was Bataan Death March survivor Valdemar DeHerrera, 103, who said he served his country with honor and dignity.

“This is the third time I am here to witness this march and I am very, very proud,” DeHerrera said.

WSMR Commander Brig. Gen. Eric Little said this is his first Bataan Memorial Death March.

“You can’t replace the feeling of being live and in person. There are so many incredible people out here today such as veterans, heroes, patriots, and there is so much energy being out here live and in person,” Little said. “I am excited to meet some veterans along the way and honor the heroes who served in Bataan.”

Summer Irvin, Business and Recreation Division Chief, said it is exciting to see the event back on live and in person.

“I can’t wait to see everyone back marching on WSMR three years later. Look at this energy, it is exciting. Welcome Back.”

Command Sgt. Maj. Jose Melendez said it was fantastic to be at the Bataan Memorial Death March live and in person.

“We’ve been looking forward to this for the last 18 months. It is great to see all the smiling faces this morning from the young people to older people who have marched it four or five times. Having everyone here live is amazing.”

Garrison Command Sgt. Maj. Devin Winnegan said he was excited for his first Bataan live and in person.
“It is going to be great. I am looking forward to the march and to see my battle buddies on the trail.”

Participant Sgt. Sylvester Blue, from Apple Valley, California, said this was his first time participating in the march.

“I am very excited and looking forward to the experience. I am looking forward to the challenge and honoring the Soldiers who were in the Bataan Death March.”

Nathan Hidalgo, from Las Cruces, said it feels great to be back. “We’ve been waiting to do the march again after three years. We did it in 2019 and now we are back and excited about the journey along the way as I run.”
