FORT KNOX, Ky. — Officials at Fort Knox are looking for the community’s help in the leadup to this year’s Earth Day in collecting small items in support of projects for veterans and others.

The Environmental Management Division is asking the community to collect and donate plastic bottle caps and lids now until April 22, which will be repurposed into park benches. Their efforts seek to accomplish two goals: encourage environmental sustainability and provide places of emotional healing.

Officials say the seats, which they are calling Battle Buddy Benches, will be strategically placed around Fort Knox as visual reminders of the daily tragic toll of veteran suicides while providing a spot for community members to sit and reflect on life.

Those interested in donating to the bottle cap Buddy Bench Project will find drop-off points at Barr Memorial Library, Ireland Army Health Clinic and the Fort Knox Recycle Center at Building 2962 on Frazer Road, as well as future locations at participating schools, organizations and Knox Hills housing areas.

Along with the bottle cap collection effort, other environment-friendly events include a cleanup of Camp Carlson April 1 and free tree giveaways at the Exchange Mall Friday, April 28, during Arbor Day. Members of EMD will also be handing out free wildflower seed packets and seed paper to encourage community members to plant local flowers that will help bolster bee populations.
