The Second Glance “Super Sale” happens once a year at the Second Glance thrift store, the next will be March 8, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. “Every item, seasonal or in stock is sold at a 50 percent discount while consignments are sold at a25 percent discount to clear storage area and to populate the shop with new items,” said Monica Mechur, Second Glance manager at Camp Darby for over 20 years.

Thrift stores on military installations resemble mini-world bazaars, in fact military families consign artifacts from their previous assignments around the world.

“One man's trash is another man's treasure, this is literally what happens at the Second Glance where I often find goods that I may not find elsewhere,” said customer Sonia Benassini.

Parents find it very convenient to be able to sell gently used children clothes as kids grow out of them, but not only that, designer’s clothes, collector’s items, sports goods, home appliances and much more are waiting for a second life.

"I really appreciate having the thrift store on base. It makes it easy to pass on things the kids have grown out of, and pick up things we need," said customer Andrea Culletto.

Military thrift stores keep a small percentage when items are sold, they not only provide a needed community service but distribute net profits to benefit their military base.

“Second Glance is a nonprofit organization. The profits go directly back to the Camp Darby Community in provision of community needs, to fund the BOSS program, used for scholarships, and in support of community events,” said Mechur.

On the Sunday before the big event, everything in the shop will be moved outside to be reorganized and redisplayed. Mechur said that without the incredible support of her volunteer Mirella Todaro, nothing would be possible.

On the special occasion, the store will host new enrollments for the Friends of Camp Darby association.

Consignments in clean and useable condition are welcome, with seasonally appropriate clothing.

The hours for the “Super Sale” are March 8 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and March 9 from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Second Glance thrift store is open Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 9:30 a.m., to 3 p.m.
