FORT LEONARD WOOD, Mo. — Gen. Gary Brito, commanding general of U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command, visited Fort Leonard Wood on Wednesday to gain familiarization with the people and mission of the Maneuver Support Center of Excellence.
This was Brito’s first visit to Fort Leonard Wood since becoming TRADOC CG in September.
During the visit, Brito met with installation and community leaders, and viewed and toured many of Fort Leonard Wood’s unique training facilities, including urban search and rescue training, the Chemical Defense Training Facility, the Military Police Stem Village area and the Army Engineer horizontal skills training being performed at Training Area 244.
At a training modernization briefing in the MSCoE headquarters building, Brito heard from representatives of each of Fort Leonard Wood’s three main schoolhouses — the U.S. Army Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear School, the U.S. Army Engineer School, and the U.S. Army Military Police School — along with experts on MSCoE’s initiatives in integrating protection capabilities to meet the Army’s perceived needs in the coming decades — what is commonly referred to as the Army of 2030 and beyond.
Brito called the briefing “extremely helpful,” adding honest feedback is critical to achieving the Army’s modernization goals.
Brito said he was impressed with the training innovations he saw during his visit, and he made special mention of the heavy equipment simulators he was shown at TA 244.
“I really like training simulators,” he said. “It’s a good crawl-walk-run. It fits well into our training model and our young troops today, they’re just ready for it.”
Continuing to build the capacity within TRADOC to keep up with modernization will help to minimize risks across the Army, Brito said.
Overall, Brito called this a very good initial visit.
“I really did learn a lot,” he said. “Both the uniformed and civilian leadership, you hit a homerun.”
