The American Legion assists families of military personnel who die on active duty on or after Sept. 11, 2001, by providing college scholarships for their children. The American Legion Legacy Scholarship Fund was established by the National Executive Committee at its October 2001 meeting.
Many of America's active-duty, Guard, and Reserve military members are married and have children. As an unfortunate consequence of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom many children of our active-duty military personnel are now members of single-parent families. Although many charities have been established to help those devastated by the loss of family on Sept. 11, The American Legion Legacy Scholarship is unique because it helps the children of those who now, and will in the future, serve America in the war against terrorism. Since its inception, the Legacy Scholarship has awarded $145,970 to twenty-seven (27) children from seventeen (17) states.
