REDSTONE ARSENAL, Ala. – Resource management professionals from across the materiel enterprise met at the Army Materiel Command headquarters Nov. 1-2 to synchronize, share best practices and network.
During the annual G-8 Forum, the professionals joined in person and virtually to discuss ongoing challenges and level set expectations.
“You are the keepers of the money our citizens put in trust to you,” said Marion Whicker, AMC’s executive deputy to the commanding general.
Throughout the session, the team learned and discussed training opportunities, ongoing operations and audit readiness. Resource managers from different major subordinate commands had the opportunity to ask questions, share their points of view and learn more from others.
“I’d challenge you to always do the right thing financially,” Whicker said. “I’d ask you to open your aperture to different perspectives.”
Throughout the two-day forum, the group received updates on AMC initiatives including Organic Industrial Base modernization and the Facility Investment Plan. They also received updates on the Army Financial Management Strategy of 2028, presented by the Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Army, Financial Management and Comptroller, Robert Cook. He said a lot of initiatives within the strategy are designed to make processes easier, and it is their responsibility as resource and financial managers to guide leaders.
“You as G-8 resource managers are trusted agents in your command,” Cook said. “You’re trusted advisors. Your job is to get them to do the fundamentals of the core mission.”
The Army Financial Management Strategy of 2028 sets priorities for the next five years, with strategic goals that include enabling the financial management workforce with tools and training, achieving and maintaining a favorable audit opinion, improving Army business processes and internal control environment, and leveraging data to improve Army operations. AMC makes up roughly 30% of the Army’s audit, Cook said.
“You have the opportunity to make history,” he said. “AMC is closer to an audit than any of the other commands in the Army. You can lead the pack, because if you can do it, anyone can do it.”
This forum follows a successful closeout of fiscal year 2022. Across the enterprise, AMC’s resource management team obligated more than $48.5 billion in appropriated funds and foreign military sales. This allowed AMC to support efforts in Ukraine, Operation Allies Welcome, quality of life programs and more.
“Simply put, AMC is everywhere our Army is and our resources improved tactical and strategic readiness and enabled operations and modernization of the OIB and installations,” said Christina Freese, deputy chief of staff for Resource Management (G-8).
Knowing the impacts of the G-8 team’s efforts, as a both a logistician at heart and a senior leader at AMC, Whicker expressed her gratitude.
“I’m extremely proud of this group and what you do,” she said. “We have the best G-8 in all of the Army.”
