Since 1776, the Army has employed civilians to work alongside Soldiers in uniform, filling critical support roles in more than 500 career fields. With more than 330,000 employees, the Army Civilian Corps is one of the largest, busiest, and most successful organizations within the Department of Defense. At headquarters, Joint Munitions Command, we have nearly 620 Army Civilians working to support the DoD munitions mission.

Recently, 29 Army Civilians took the oath and joined us as employees at Headquarters, JMC. In Fiscal Year 2022, 68 employees have attended JMC HQ’s multi-day onboarding program called Achieving Maximum Professional Employee Development Program. This program provides new employees with exposure to all facets of HQ JMC’s mission and core competencies.

JMC strives to invest in its greatest assets, its people, from the beginning of their career to the end. Aligning with the JMC Human Capital Strategic Plan and the Army People Strategy to focus on its people, professional development, and leadership, JMC successfully executed another cohort of AMPED. This program on-boards, acculturates, and immediately bonds new employees to the organization, mission, senior leaders, and people.

HQ JMC Operations Center Battle Captain Mark Sikes, as presenter for AMPED, said, “We must never fall short when it comes to recruiting, maintaining, and growing our workforce. Our employees are JMC’s greatest asset, and the core attribute to JMC’s continued success; providing Ready – Reliable – Lethal munitions to the Warfighter."

“AMPED is a 3-day program that offers new hires an opportunity to learn about JMC’s ammunition mission and core competencies (produce, store, distribute and demilitarize), the ammunition life cycle and munitions products, and the how, in their new position, they will support the JMC mission to meet Joint Warfighter ammunition requirements,” said Norbert Herrera, director of Human Resources at JMC.

Many subject matter experts work as a cohesive team to develop the course material and continue to improve the program time and time again.

Nathan Hawley, the director of the Munitions and Logistics Readiness Center, welcomed the new employees during opening remarks, “As a JMC employee, your professional training and leader development is essential to us achieving mission success. These initiatives align with our Human Capital Strategic Plan, which you will hear about later in the week, and how each of you play a part in meeting our JMC mission.”

He also expressed the importance the core competencies of JMC and explained the strength of cultural pillars and networking in the classroom to build professional relationships and boost our mission.

JMC produces small, medium, and large-caliber ammunition items for the Department of Defense. JMC is the logistics integrator for life-cycle management of ammunition and provides a global presence of technical support to U.S. combat units wherever they are stationed or deployed. JMC’s logistics operation is unique to the Department of Defense and its industrial base is an important asset in supporting the warfighter.
