Task Force 120 - Network Capability Sets
What is it'
A capability set includes interoperable communication systems and applications fielded together to strengthen Brigade Combat Team (BCT) Battle Command Network and improve effectiveness in today's operational environment. New capability sets will continue to build upon the current network every two years, upgrading units' communication capabilities to provide capabilities most in demand. Capability set fielding will be synchronized with the Army force generation model, and will include the necessary doctrine, organization, training, and leader development required to train, maintain, and fight as a fully integrated BCTs.
What has the Army done'
The Army is transitioning to a brigade modernization approach that biannually develops and fields capability packages to adapt to the changing operational environment - filling the highest priority shortfalls for Soldiers and their leaders with the best capabilities available. Each package will include a capability set focused on the Battle Command Network and will strengthen ties to critical resources, information, and fellow Soldiers - ultimately empowering individual Soldiers and BCT leaders.
What is planned for the future'
The Army is considering several systems to satisfy requirements for a robust network and battle command on the move. Systems under consideration include the Warfighter Information Network-Tactical (WIN-T) INC 2, Joint Tactical Radio System Ground Mobile Radio (JTRS GMR), and Enhanced Position Location Radio System (EPLRS). The Army is also enhancing current applications and fielding the tactical ground reporting (TIGR) application to allow units at company level and below to share/display relevant information.
Why is it important to the Army'
The significance of the battle command network continues to grow. Capability sets allow the Army to incrementally field fully integrated command and control tools, which supports command needs, while maintaining backward and forward compatibility with other units in the force. Ultimately, these sets provide a means for the Army to keep up with the rapid pace of change in the operating environment.
