DOD invests extra funding to help commissaries reduce prices

The Department of Defense’s “Taking Care of Service Members and Families” initiative lays out comprehensive actions to support military members struggling with the financial impacts of inflation, supply chain disruptions and the pandemic. “The Department’s added investment in our budget allows us to reduce commissary prices at the register about 3-5 percent on most items – particularly on food staples that struggling military families need most such as bread, eggs, milk and more,” said Bill Moore, director and CEO of the Defense Commissary Agency (DeCA). Commissaries’ dietitian-approved recipes offer quick, nutritious, economical meal ideas

The Defense Commissary Agency’s Thinking Outside the Box recipes offer meal solutions that are quick, healthy and are designed to always save you money. “Preparing nutritious food at home does not have to be difficult or expensive,” said Deborah Harris, DeCA’s dietitian and health and wellness program manager (who holds a master of Public Health degree and is a registered dietitian and certified diabetes care and education specialist). “These recipes, found on commissaries.com, offer meal solutions that are quick, healthy and are designed to always save you money.” Read the entire news release online.

 

Commissaries observe 31st year of being military’s grocer

Much has changed for the Defense Commissary Agency (DeCA) over 31 years including product selection, technology for front-end checkouts and other key grocery functions. However, what remains constant is DeCA’s mission to deliver a commissary benefit that improves the military’s quality of life by saving them money on their groceries. “From 1991 to 2022, our mandate has not changed: We are steadfast in our commitment to be the military’s grocery provider of choice and to deliver the commissary benefit at the best savings possible,” Moore said. “We want our eligible patrons to know that if they’re not shopping their commissary, then they are missing out on saving at least a quarter on every dollar compared to prices at ‘outside the gate’ grocery stores – that’s $50 back in their pockets on a $200 grocery bill!
