WIESBADEN, Germany – Installation Management Command-Europe garrisons are preparing to hold their annual Retiree Appreciation Days throughout the month of October.

Each garrison is responsible for their own event, with IMCOM-Europe Retirement Services Officer Rita Hewitt overseeing the progress. The garrisons coordinate with Hewitt to confirm that the dates requested are available.

“I ensure that the Retirement Services officers in each garrison are trained appropriately and if there are any issues or concerns that they can’t handle at their level then it is escalated up to my level,” Hewitt explained.

This year, the garrisons can look forward to hosting three VIPs – Mark Overberg, director of Army Retirement Services, as well as two VIPs from Defense Finance Accounting Service Cleveland, the government office from which retirees receive their retirement pay.

“One of the VIPs from DFAS will actually hold one-on-one appointments with the retirees regarding their benefits and their retired pay,” Hewitt said.

The Retiree Appreciation Day events allow communities to provide a variety of services for retirees and their families at one time, in one location and to thank them for their service and sacrifice. By providing them with the best customer service, members are able to assist the retirees to ensure that they are taken care of after retirement.

In order to gain important information about their retirement benefits, Soldiers are encouraged to contact the retirement services officer at their garrison

The Federal Benefits Unit will be there to assist with paperwork and processing so that benefits are received on time.

Each garrison is responsible for releasing a retiree newsletter, which contains information regarding the RSOs and the services they provide. Along with this, the DFAS Newsletter and Army Echoes are also vital sources for Soldiers to gain important information about the retirement services made available to them.

“I would stress for the retirees to make use of their Retirement Services officers. It's one of the main ways that they can stay connected to the military and the retirement community. There is a vast amount of knowledge and information that the Retirement Services officers hold for the retirees, and I highly recommend that the retirees stay engaged with the retiree community and attend the Retiree Appreciation Days, specifically held for them.” Hewitt stated.
