SANDY, Utah – The Science, technology, engineering and mathematics career fields are a major part of Utah’s economy. They are a driving force for the future of the state that takes people in those fields on a direct course to Dugway Proving Ground (DPG).

Dugway contributed an estimated $266.7 million to the state’s GDP in 2019, and the majority of the 2,500 full and part-time positions at the installation are focused on STEM. On September 27 and 28, Utah students attended STEM Fest at the Mountain America Expo Center in Sandy to see where an education in science, technology, engineering and math can take them.

Dozens of exhibits at this year’s event highlighted the STEM work being done around the state. Around 1,800 students stopped by Dugway’s booth to get a glimpse into the work being performed on the installation which gave them the opportunity to speak directly with some of the experts at DPG about what life is like in the lab. They were given the opportunity to test the acidity of different chemicals with a litmus test – those who guessed correctly won a prize.

In 2019, the average wage paid at Dugway was $88,000 per year which is the highest average wage for a military installation in Utah. That’s $15,000 higher than the next highest paying installation and twice the average wage in Tooele County, which means working at Dugway Proving Ground pays off in more ways than one.
