FORT Sill, Okla. (Sept. 27, 2022) — Reynold’s Army Health Clinic launched the Military Health System (MHS) GENESIS, a new electronic health record (EHR) and patient portal, March 19, 2022, and are at 100% as of July.
The Department of Defense’s new EHR system, known as MHS GENESIS, allows patients to have full access to all their medical records under one system. All branches of service will have complete access to their medical records.
"Like every Military Treatment Facility that has transitioned to using the new military health system (MHS) GENESIS electronic medical record (EMR), Reynolds's Army Health Clinic experienced a steep learning curve and significant disruption to our operations,” said Col. Randall J. Freeman, deputy commander, Clinical Services.
“We were proverbially flying the plane while still building it, and thus had to decrease access to care by half in the initial weeks to give our clinical teams time to navigate the new system as they still took care of patients. However, as of July we are back to 100% access,” he said.
MHS GENESIS replaced TRICARE Online and secure messaging at the facility. The new EHR provides doctors enhanced, secure technology to manage a patient’s health information. When fully deployed, MHS GENESIS will be the single health record for service members, veterans and their families.
“The RAHC staff are doing amazingly well with the new system, which improves communication between care teams and between care teams and patients. Patient safety has also been improved. The new EMR includes numerous behind-the-scenes improvements to workflow, records management, and charting. But our patients experience the same outstanding medical care they have come to expect from RAHC providers and clinical teams," said Freeman.
According to Joel McFarland, RAHC public affairs officer, the main message to patients is they need to know how they log in – either with a Common Access Card (CAC) or login,” he said. “We have all the information on the Reynolds webpage -- including a QR code you can scan to get all the information.”
MHS GENESIS began deploying to DoD hospitals and clinics in 2017 and the program is expected to be fully integrated across all military hospitals and clinics by 2024.
