SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico – “We’re the United States Army, we do this for a living.”

Under Secretary of the Army Gabe Camarillo said over audience applause when asked how to lead in a crisis during a speaker panel at the League of United Latin American Citizen’s (LULAC) national convention July 26.

Camarillo participated in the convention’s opening panel for the Federal Training Institute portion of LULAC’s convention during his first visit to Puerto Rico. Over 300 LULAC members attended the panel as part of LULAC’s Federal Training Institute which provides education and training focused on developing federal government employees.

During the panel’s leadership discussion, Camarillo offered that leadership is about taking the entire team along with you.

“You have to bring everyone along with you. And that means listening and taking the time to seek input from absolutely everybody that’s involved in the organization,” Camarillo said. “It’s really important that everybody has an opportunity to voice their opinion and be heard.”

Camarillo’s remarks set the atmosphere for the Army’s participation in the convention as organizations from across the Army hosted attendees at recruitment and education booths and participated in speaking events throughout the week.

“I want to thank LULAC for hosting this incredible event,” Camarillo said. “And thank them for letting me be a part of this on behalf of the Army.”

While in Puerto Rico, Camarillo also met with local Army and civic leaders and reinforced the Army’s pride in its Puerto Rican Soldiers and Civilians.
