WHEELER ARMY AIRFIELD, Hawaii -Efforts to contain the wildland fire at Makua Military Reservation (MMR) have made significant progress in the last 24 hours and this will serve as the last update, pending any further developments.
The wildfire has burned nearly 180 acres and the blaze is more than 80% contained. U.S. Army fire fighters remain on site, along with the use of aerial assets to douse the remaining flames and hotspots.
"While this fire is not over yet, and we will continue to montior it overnight, I want to thank all the first responders on the ground, in the air and behind the scenes who have tirelessly come together to manage it to this point," said Col. Steve McGunegle, U.S. Army Garrison Hawaii Commander.
Fire teams will remain on the ground through tomorrow unitl the containment is 100% and the threat is eliminated. The Army has aerial units on stand-by should there be a flare up.
As previously mentioned, there were no units training at MMR at the time of the fire starting, and the investigation continues to determine the probable cause of the fire.
