FORT LEONARD WOOD, Mo. — The U.S. Army Garrison Fort Leonard Wood held a change-of-responsibility ceremony Aug. 11 in Lincoln Hall Auditorium, where Command Sgt. Maj. Sean McGlensey relinquished responsibility of the garrison to Command Sgt. Maj. Danny Castleberry.

During the ceremony, Deputy Garrison Commander Walter Mattil, who served as the reviewing officer, highlighted how McGlensey’s ability to adapt to and work in the garrison environment ensured mission success, even under the most trying circumstances.

“Although the command sergeant major is technically the commander’s battle buddy, he, the commander and I coalesced into a tactical, operational and strategic trinity,” Mattil said. “That, combined with our stellar directors and enterprise partners, guaranteed mission-essential services to meet the needs of the senior mission commander and all tenant units. We accomplished this under one of the most difficult times of our professional lives — the pandemic.”

There is a learning curve to being an effective garrison command sergeant major, Mattil said, and McGlensey transitioned very successfully into the position.

“Without question, Command Sergeant Major McGlensey has been the best garrison command sergeant major I have served with,” Mattil said. “He was excited and passionate about our mission. He adapted, understood his role and excelled at all he did.”

In his farewell remarks, McGlensey — who is retiring after 26 years of service — said teamwork was the key to his success at Fort Leonard Wood.

“The Maneuver Support Center of Excellence and garrison are very busy organizations, where complex problems are presented daily,” he said. “I had the most amazing team to tackle these challenges with, and I know I will not find another team who works as well as they do.”

Castleberry most recently served as director of Training and Leader Development at the U.S. Army Engineer School here, which allowed him the chance to shadow McGlensey for the past few weeks, Mattil said.

“From what I have witnessed, Command Sergeant Major Castleberry will make an exceptional addition to the garrison team,” he said. “We have high expectations for him.”

Castleberry said he is thankful for the opportunity to serve the Soldiers, families and civilians of Fort Leonard Wood.

“I’m truly excited to see what we can accomplish together,” he said.
