FORT EUSTIS, Va. — The U.S. Army 597th Transportation Brigade held a virtual NCO and Soldier of the quarter board July 5-10.The winners were Spc. Nicholas Pappen, 690th Rapid Port Opening Element, 832nd Transportation Battalion and Sgt. Clifton Johnson, 841st Transportation Battalion.

Pappan is a prior Infantry Soldier (11B) and said the physical requirements were easy to meet. He focused on the promotion board to earn the title of Soldier of the Quarter and said his leaders quizzed him at work every day for months.

Pappan is a Motor Transport Operator (88M) and works in the 690th RPOE S1 orderly room. He has been in the Army for six years and his short-term goal is to become an NCO.

Pappan said he will encourage his Soldiers to compete in competitions.

"My leaders reminded me that my job is important, but it is also important to get your name out there," Pappan said, "When someone believes in you, it impacts you and it made me want to give 100 percent."

Johnson is a Terminal Operations (88N) NCO and has been in the Army for over 10 years. He is a former Food Service Specialist (92G). Johnson is a father of three, ages 19, 16, and 13. His hobbies include playing sports, learning new skills and spending time with family.

His long-term goal is to become a mobility warrant officer and eventually start a worldwide logistical business, importing and exporting essential goods.

Every member of the Army team has the opportunity to excel as far as their talents and determination will take them, to provide for their families and to build successful lives in the Army.
