Utility Abatement Program

Working with each individual city council to pass resolutions allowing for Utility Abatement during deployments, at least 50 Utah cities are offering free/reduced city utilities to Service Member's Families during deployments. Families simply present a copy of their sponsorAca,!a,,cs military order to their city utility billing office. The military order predicts the start date and projected end date for the Utility Abatement Program to begin and end. Service Members of every branch and affiliation have benefited by this program which was started at a Utah National Guard Family Assistance Center in 2003. Millions of dollars have been saved by Utah Military Families from this collaboration with Utah cities.

Military Spouse Residency Relief Act

On November 11, 2009, the President signed into law the Military Spouse Residency Relief Act. This Act, among other things, provides that when a service member leaves his or her home State in accord with military or naval orders, the service member's spouse may retain residency in his or her home State for voting and tax purposes, after relocating from that State to accompany the service member. In the State of Utah an exemption from Utah withholding tax may be claimed if an employee's spouse is a member of the US Armed Services and their state of legal residence is not Utah.
