WASHINGTON (June 30, 2022) – Lt. Gen. Robert L. Marion, the Principal Military Deputy to the Assistant Secretary of the Army for Acquisition, Logistics and Technology, announced today the launch of the ninth annual Maj. Gen. Harold J. “Harry” Greene Awards for Acquisition Writing. The competition was established in 2014 to encourage all individuals to share their ideas, insights and experiences for improving Army acquisition through critical thinking.

“Our annual writing competition, in memory of one of our great acquisition leaders, is designed to allow members of the acquisition workforce, and all interested individuals, to drive the dialogue and influence the outcome of significant issues affecting Army acquisition in today’s increasingly complex global security environment,” Marion said. “Through critical thinking and writing on key subjects related to Army acquisition, we will continually improve the process of delivering capabilities to joint warfighters with speed and efficiency. We keep the competition open to everyone with an interest in Army acquisition, especially members of the defense acquisition workforce, to encourage maximum participation.”

Prospective authors may submit articles, opinion pieces or essays from 500 words to 1,800 words in one of four categories: lessons learned, innovation, future operations, or acquisition reform. Submissions must be unclassified, original and not previously published or submitted to a writing competition or publication. A distinguished panel of judges will select four award winners, one for each category, with four additional works selected for honorable mention. All entries must be submitted by email no later than midnight Sept. 30, 2022. Additional information about the competition can be found at, including the call for submissions and Army AL&T Magazine publications of previous award winners and honorable mentions.

The annual acquisition writing competition is named for Maj. Gen. Harry Greene, the Deputy Commanding General of the Combined Security Transition Command-Afghanistan, who was killed on Aug. 5, 2014, while making a visit to Marshal Fahim National Defense University in Kabul, Afghanistan.

“Through this writing competition, we continue to honor Harry’s 34 years of distinguished service to our Army and the nation,” Marion said. “We also remember his lasting contributions to Army acquisition.”

The winners of the writing competition will be honored at the U.S. Army Acquisition Executive’s Excellence in Leadership Awards Ceremony to be held in Washington, D.C., in December 2022. The winning entries will also be published in the Spring 2023 edition of Army AL&T Magazine.
