FORT KNOX, Ky. – Confusion turned to surprise, followed by smiles and tears as Susana Rendon discovered the real reason she was asked to visit the Radcliff VFW Post on June 29.
Rendon was greeted with a ceremony to honor her as the 2022 South Central Kentucky Red Cross Chapter Volunteer of the Year.
Throughout her time volunteering, Rendon served as the co-lead for the Fort Knox Warrior Warehouse and provided many other community contributions. Fort Knox Garrison Commander Col. Lance O’Bryan and Garrison Command Sgt. Maj. William Fogle attended and shared why she was so deserving of the award.
“For your devoted service volunteering with the Red Cross Fort Knox, your steadfast professionalism has left an enduring impact on the Soldiers, civilians and Families of our community,” said O’Bryan. “Thank you for all you do.”
Rendon expressed her gratitude to both her fellow volunteers and the support of Fort Knox leadership in helping her succeed with her mission to serve others.
“It’s an amazing feeling to be recognized – not expected, not required, but appreciated,” said Rendon. “It’s been wonderful to be able to help others and give of myself. It’s been nothing but a blessing.”
According to her nomination form, Rendon was chosen because she performed at an exemplary level, demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to the Fort Knox community, and volunteered over 1,000 hours of her time working with the Red Cross.
Following her win at the chapter level, Rendon will compete for the Kentucky Regional Volunteer of the Year award, where a panel will choose the recipient.
