Joint Munitions Command recently hosted a Pre-Command Orientation for incoming commanders and senior staff to JMC subordinate installations. Twelve incoming and current JMC senior leaders attended the orientation at headquarters, JMC, in Rock Island, Illinois. The four-day course was designed to prepare senior leaders for their upcoming missions within the ammunition enterprise.
Leaders from HQ JMC provided opening remarks and welcomed the incoming senior leaders to the organization. JMC Chief of Staff, Col. Todd W. Burnley, emphasized, “People are the most important factor influencing whether your organization works or does not work. That means prioritizing people in order to
meet mission readiness, which is our reason for existence. As you become acquainted with your new staffs and missions, however, be careful not to concentrate on what is comfortable for you. Instead, find what is uncomfortable and concentrate on that.”
The first day of the orientation included opening remarks, a JMC Overview, and presentations by human resources and legal. The remaining sessions included in-depth orientations concerning command missions and functions with briefings by each of the staff offices. In the process, attendees were informed of the how HQ JMC supports them.
Jim Seward, Strategic Planning Analyst, added, “It is important to make sure our people understand they are all part of a larger process, moving toward the same goal.”
JMC senior leaders also emphasized a key element of the relationship between HQ, JMC, and subordinate installations: installation leaders do not work for JMC staff; JMC staff exists to assist installation leaders.
JMC staff provided attendees with detailed welcome packages, installation specific packages, and JMC pre-command orientation point of contact information for use during their new commands. Networking opportunities were also available, both during break-out sessions and social “ice breaker” events.
Joint Munition Command manages 17 sites, which collectively produce, store, distribute, and demilitarize small, medium, and large-caliber conventional ammunition items for the Department of Defense. JMC is the sustainment and logistics integrator for life-cycle management of ammunition and provides a global presence of technical support to U.S. combat units wherever they are station or deployed. The Pre-Command Orientation ensures that new leaders are prepared to support the JMC mission.
