FORT BENNING, GA. – The Maneuver Center of Excellence held a cake-cutting ceremony to celebrate the Army’s 247th Birthday at McGinnis-Wickham Hall, Fort Benning, Ga., on June 14, and to honor 247 years of selfless service as an always ready force.

Brig. Gen. Thomas M. Feltey, armor school commandant, Maneuver Center of Excellence, and Command Sgt. Maj. Derrick C. Garner, MCoE command sergeant major, joined Master Sgt. Robert Goudy from San Diego, California, one of the senior Soldiers on post with the 3rd Battalion, 81st Armored Regiment, 199th Infantry Brigade, in making the first cut of the cake.

Pvt. Kaylee Weygandt from Prineville, Oregon with Alpha Company, 2nd Battalion, 47th Infantry Regiment, 197 Infantry Brigade, one of the most junior Soldiers on post, made the second cut of the cake to show the continuity between one of our youngest and one of our more seasoned Soldiers at Fort Benning.

Feltey spoke at the event and reflected on how the Army and Fort Benning are shaping the next generation of leaders.

“All of those that have come before us … make our Army so great and here at Fort Benning the best part about is that not only are we a part of the Army, but we get to make the next Army every single day – all of you and all [our] training units," said Feltey. “We are forging that next generation of leaders to ensure that our Army is in a good position for the next 20 years. Happy Birthday Army!”
