The NCO Leadership Center of Excellence welcomed FORSCOM’s command team, Gen. Michael Garrett and Command Sgt. Maj. Todd Sims May 10, for a day-long visit.
Garrett and Sims started the day early by taking part in physical readiness training with cadre and Sergeants Major Course Class 72 students from the Department of Joint Interagency, Intergovernmental, Multinational Operations. The two lead more than 60 students in a series of PRT events used in preparation of the Army Combat Fitness Test.
Later in the morning Garrett and Sims spoke to Class 72 about many Army force management related issues. Garrett told the Soldiers in attendance that as senior NCOs they will be important assets to their future commanders in maintaining morale and training. He also stressed the importance of developing training schedules and adhering to those schedules to ensure Soldiers are ready for any challenges they encounter.
Garrett gave his personal advice on how to lead Soldiers.
“There is only one way to lead in the Army,” he said. “From the front of the formation by personal example.”
Both Garrett and Sims commented on the importance of the role NCOs have in Army and on developing deeper unit culture to support Solders and their families.
Sims also gave his personal advice on how to lead soldiers from an NCO perspective. He stressed the importance of setting an example others could follow.
“What comes out of your mouth,” he said, “should match what your Soldiers see you do every day.”
After speaking to the class and answering questions, class representatives presented Garrett and Sims with class 72 challenge coins.
FORSCOM is the largest United States Army command and consists of active Army, Army Reserve and Army National Guard Soldiers. Many SMC 72 students will go on to serve in sergeant major roles under FORSCOM.
