FORT BRAGG, N.C. - A former commander of the 16th Military Police Brigade has been recalled from retirement to command the brigade again at Fort Bragg while its headquarters element is deployed to Afghanistan.
Col. Mary Maier will serve as the provisional brigade commander as the current Brigade Commander, Col. John F. Garrity, deploys with Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 16th MP Bde. in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
Maier commanded the 16th MP Bde. from June 1995 to July 1997 and was the first female to lead the brigade.
Before her brigade command, she led the 759th MP Battalion, then headquartered at Fort Carson, Colo., through a deployment to Saudi Arabia and Iraq in support of Operations Desert Shield and Storm.
She later published "Military Police Operations: Desert Shield/Storm - A Personal Experience Monograph" while attending the U.S. Army War College in Carlisle Barracks, Pa. The book documented her experience as a military police battalion commander in a war zone.
Maier entered the Army in 1973 and attended one of the military's last Women's Army Corps orientation courses. Afterwards, she went through one of the first Military Police Officer Basic Courses which accepted women.
As provisional brigade commander, Maier will provide training readiness authority to the remaining four battalions of the 16th MP Bde. stationed at Fort Bragg, Fort Stewart, Ga., Fort Campbell, Ky., and Fort Drum, N.Y.
