FORT KNOX, Ky. – For the second year in a row, 34th Military Police Detachment hosted the Fort Knox Top Cop Competition.
This year’s event April 21 featured an emergency vehicle operator course, stress shooting competition, air assault obstacle course, and law enforcement knowledge test. Staff Sgt. Steven Ashley of 34th said Top Cop is about highlighting the officers’ hard work.

“This shows who’s the best of the best of our MPs,” said Ashley. “It really fosters esprit de corps between the 34th and 905th and brings us together having a friendly competition.”
Ashley said the competition tested the Soldiers in areas similar to what they can experience while responding to high stress situations. He said the plan is for the competition to gain a farther reach at the installation in the future.
“It [has been] something that we are hoping to grow and reach more people,” said Ashely. “We might reach out to other MPs on the installation next year and see if they would like to compete as well.”
Seven officers from 34th, 905th and the Department of Emergency Services participated in the competition. Based on cumulative score, Sgt. Michael Dailey of 34th was named the winner. Dailey is an investigator and has been an MP since 2017.
Although Dailey was named the overall winner, different officers won in each individual category, according to Ashely, demonstrating an additional benefit of the competition.
“They’re able to show their skills and how they’re learning throughout the year,” said Ashley. “At the end of the day, it can help recognize Soldiers that stand out.”
