FORT HOOD, Texas - Families, friends and Soldiers of the 4th Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division "Long Knives" witnessed two battalion changes of command during a ceremony July 23, on Fort Hood's Cooper Field.
Lt. Col. Edward Bohnemann, the outgoing commander of the brigade's 2nd Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment, passed responsibility of the Garryowen troopers to Lt. Col. Andy Boston, the incoming commander.
"Under the leadership of Edward Bohnemann, Garryowen Troopers did an absolutely amazing job in Iraq," said Col. Philip Battaglia, Commander of the 4th BCT, 1st Cav. Div.
While in the southern provinces of Iraq, the Garryowen Soldiers constructed the Forward Operating Base Garryowen from the ground-up and quickly embraced their mission to deter weapons smuggling and aid the local national government in the Maysan Province.
Lt. Col. Scott Kendrick, the outgoing commander of the 2nd Battalion, 12th Cavalry Regiment, passed responsibility of the Thunderhorse troopers to Lt. Col. Joseph Holland, the incoming commander.
The Thunderhorse battalion's partnership with the Iraqi Security Forces in the southern provinces of Iraq consisted of establishing new facilities, reinforcing partnerships and maintaining security for the local population.
"Both of these commanders have been tremendous teachers, coaches and mentors throughout their careers, but particularly so in service with the Long Knife Brigade," Battaglia said.
The Long Knife brigade recently completed their 30-day block leave and will conduct the brigade uncasing and change of command ceremony on Aug. 6.
