FORT KNOX, Ky. – An upcoming training opportunity may become the first of many in-person training experiences Fort Knox civilian employees will have to further their career growth.

The Army Management Staff College is sending a mobile training unit to Fort Knox June 6-24, 2022 to teach the Civilian Education System Intermediate Course – something which would normally require funding to travel to the school’s home at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.

Workforce Development specialist Laurie Majcher said while the college tries to send mobile training units to different installations every year, this is the first time ever at Fort Knox. She said the reaction of the representative who visited in February to scout the post was even better than she expected.

“He was really impressed,” said Majcher. “When he sent the information back to his team, he said ‘I don’t know why we haven’t come to Fort Knox before!’”

According to Majcher, the representative was encouraged by the facilities Fort Knox had to conduct a course like this. She said the layout of Palma Hall, where the class portion will take place, is a better setup than units usually have access to.

Majcher said the in-person Intermediate Course, which is considered the second phase for civilians who have completed the intermediate online learning portion, will have 36 available spots. Although enough people have already signed on to fill this first course at Fort Knox, she urged interested civilians to keep enrolling because there’s still a chance to get in.

“There will be people that have to drop out,” said Majcher. “From past experience and teaching classes over the years, usually about a quarter of the people who sign up aren’t able to go.”

Majcher said the possibility of spots opening up isn’t the only reason for civilians wanting to take the course to enroll.

“They want to see that we’ve maxed this class out and that there are people on the waiting list, so they know there’s a demand for the class,” said Majcher. “That’s why I want people to keep signing up.”

In addition to the facilities Fort Knox offers, Majcher said the college representative also expressed enthusiasm about how well the word was getting out about the course availability. She said it’s for this reason that there is a higher likelihood for more future opportunities.

“He said maybe in the future we could do two classes; one in the spring and one in the fall,” said Majcher. “We’ve just got to show that there’s an interest and we have a need for it here.”

The CES Intermediate Course is one of many educational opportunities through the college for civilians to expand their knowledge. Majcher said taking courses like this can significantly enhance a civilian employee’s marketability.

“If you are really wanting to advance in your career, this helps you,” said Majcher.

Majcher said she hopes June’s CES course is just the beginning of more career advancement opportunities for Fort Knox civilians. As of now, the training unit is slated to return to Fort Knox in 2023 to again offer the CES Intermediate Course.

The goal, according to Majcher, is to eventually have the unit come and teach additional courses. She said she wants everyone considering enrolling to see the immense benefit of taking a course when the college sends people to teach it.

“If this is something that you want and you’re looking for an opportunity to advance your career, take advantage of it coming here,” said Majcher. “This way, you don’t have to go and be away from your family. You can just go home at the end of the day.”
