On March 2, Read Across America Day, Garrison Commander, Col. Glenn Mellor and Garrison Sgt. Major Juan Jimenez read to children at the Family and Morale Welfare and Welfare Child and Youth Services Child Development Center on Goss Road.
In 1998, the National Education Association launched Read Across America Day to encourage children to embrace books and enjoy reading. It later developed into a year-round program with special celebrations in March.
This year the Redstone educational outreach effort was led by Garrison’s School Liaison Officer, Erica Lewis and the Garrison Public Affairs team as part of an initiative to highlight the importance of reading for students in local school districts.
More than 25 persons from organizations across Redstone Arsenal gathered February 22-24 at the Redstone FMWR Library for a reading event to support taping of the 2022 Team Redstone Read Across America videos.
Volunteer readers from the Army Material Command, Headquarters Company, Aviation and Missile Command, Army Contracting Command, Redstone Test Center, Rapid Capabilities and Critical Technologies Office and Garrison participated as volunteer readers for the videos.
The links to the videos can be found on YouTube and DIVIDS. In the past, the Redstone workforce have participated as face-to-face readers at local schools to support Read Across America Day.
In 2021, Team Redstone began supported school requests for RAA readers with the videos due to COVID-19 safety concerns.
