
Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering, the Honorable Heidi Shyu visited White Sands Missile Range to get an up-close look at the latest developments in directed energy technology. She also visited facilities with additional testing and evaluation technologies critical to Army Modernization.
During her visit, Shyu and her team met with Brig. Gen. Eric D. Little, White Sands Missile Range Commanding General, Command Sgt. Maj. José Meléndez, White Sands Missile Range Command Sgt. Maj., Robert Stone, White Sands Missile Range Executive Director, Col. Shawanta Smart, White Sands Test Center Commander, and Jerry Tyree, White Sands Test Center Deputy.

Shyu's focus within the Department of Defense is research, science, technology, engineering, and innovation. According to Shyu's latest vision released in early February, her office is currently working on “a course for the United States' military to strengthen its technological superiority amidst a global race for technological advantage.”
