ABERDEEN PROVING GROUND, Md. –The U.S. Army Communications-Electronics Command (CECOM) Software Engineering Center (SEC) is the largest software center in the Department of Defense. As such it is the site of cutting edge technology and innovation being dispersed throughout the DOD. However technology doesn’t create itself and it certainly doesn’t fix itself.

This science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) field requires keen people who love to take things apart and see what’s going on inside. Fortunately SEC has a lot of personnel like that. One such person is James Caseja.

Caseja is an Information Technology Specialist within the Cyber Security Division for SEC, and like many of his peers within the organization has a passion for the work he does.

“I like solving the complex problems for the Army,” he said. “There’s always a new challenge every single day, whether securing the software or working with other cross functional teams to deliver a capability.”

With a skill set like Caseja’s you might think he would have a pick of career paths to choose from, and he probably does. But according to him there’s a distinct added value to working for the DoD.

“The opportunity, the benefits and the ability to see how the Army really functions you can’t find anywhere else,” Caseja said. “The end goal is supporting the warfighter and that brings it home and closer a little bit. Especially since a lot of us have been in or have family or friends who have served.”

February 20 – 26 2022 is National Engineers Week. The observance is dedicated to ensuring a diverse and well-educated future engineering workforce by increasing understanding of and interest in engineering and technology careers, according to the National Society of Professional Engineers website.

“Engineering provides the opportunity to get out of your comfort zone and create,” Caseja said. “There is no pre-determined line in the sand to determine what is actually feasible.”
