WIESBADEN, Germany – The U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden Army Community Service is ready to assist community members who want to volunteer throughout the year.
The first step for anyone wanting to volunteer at any office is to go to the Volunteer Management Information System website and register. The website is located at https://vmis.armyfamilywebportal.com.
The ACS office on Hainerberg Kaserne manages the volunteer program and potential volunteers need to check in there for information, agreement forms and training. Once a volunteer is registered, they can access the volunteer opportunities available in the community.
Among the many benefits gained from volunteering, it is an avenue used to keep your job skills current, enhance job opportunities, gain additional work experience, learn new skills and become part of a team.
Service members pursuing the Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal are able to obtain the required documentation, outlining their volunteer progress, as they log hours in the VMIS system.
“It’s important for volunteers to sign up and log their hours because the volunteer service records are maintained in VMIS and can be retrieved at any time, especially as people move from one station to another,” said Hellen Fakolujo, ACS Army Volunteer Corps Coordinator. The service records can also be used as proof of gained experience on your resume when applying for jobs.
Because of the extra manpower needed to provide services during the holiday season, many offices rely on volunteers from the community to help them. For instance, the United Services Organization relies on volunteers to help them with both their Thanksgiving and Christmas food giveaways.
A few organizations that are always in need of volunteers are the Boy and Girl Scouts, Outdoor Recreation, Wiesbaden Community Spouses Club Thrift Shop, American Red Cross, USO, ACS, Child and Youth Services, Exceptional Family Member Program, Family Readiness Groups, as well as the hospital, museums, schools, and at the chapels.
