FORT HUACHUCA, Ariz. – Today Alpha Company, 40th Expeditionary Signal Battalion, cased its colors during a ceremony on Renegade Field in preparation for the battalion inactivation in July 2022.

“Alpha Company casing their guidon is one step closer to the inactivation of the battalion planned for July 2022,” said Lt. Col. Joseph Smith, battalion commander, 40th ESB.

The company’s mission was rapid deployment at a moment’s notice providing communications to warfighters, allies and partners in training and combat theater operations across the world.

Alpha Company is the first of four companies making up the 40th ESB to officially inactivate, and Soldiers will begin reassignments, Smith added.

Capt. Eric Peace, company commander, and 1st Sgt. Khawand Canty, company first sergeant, cased the Alpha Company colors against a somber, winter sky in front of leadership, Soldiers and families.

Peace and Canty commended Soldiers for successfully accomplishing multiple missions leading up to the inactivation.

“You all did an excellent job in the two final missions,” Peace said with gratitude. “You all led the way.”

Alpha Company recently helped warfighter training at Fort Riley, Kansas, and supported the 4th Infantry Division during training at Fort Irwin, California.

“The team that I have now really work together extremely well,” Peace said.

The inactivation of 40th ESB is a historic moment given all their contributions to the Signal Corps and the Army, the company commander explained.

“As a leader, you always want to train your team in the field and prepare for war,” Peace said. “Inactivation, for me, is bittersweet.”
