Have you ever wondered how many calories you should be eating? How many carbohydrates, fats and proteins make up your perfect diet? Well come in to your local Army Wellness Center to learn just that.

Previously in this series we learned about the BodPod, but in this session we dive into metabolisms. “Upping your Metabolism” is a class, interactive in nature, where the presenter breaks down the ins and outs of how your metabolism works. You go over understanding portion sizes, changes in environment and what is readily available to your area.

The course covers some of the more popular diets, like Keto, Intermittent Fasting and Vegetarian/Vegan. You will talk about how your exercise routine impacts your resting metabolic rate and your daily caloric needs. Best of all you will learn that sleep is the best resource to recovery.

After the class you will be scheduled to come in and have your resting metabolic rate taken. Your resting metabolic rate is the energy required to maintain essential physiological processes in a relaxed, awake and reclined state. Resting Metabolic Rate testing is simple, fast, and a report printout is provided in seconds via the built-in thermal printer.

The Army Wellness Center uses a FitMate machine that you place on your head, and makes you feel like an astronaut. The FitMate uses Oxygen uptake (VO2) and is measured in real-time by means of a dynamic mixing chamber. The test takes approximately 15 minutes to complete. Afterwards you will sit down with your health educator to talk about the results.

The health educator will use the results of your metabolic testing and resting metabolic rate to provide tailored strategies for weight loss, gain or maintenance. If your goal is weight loss, you may talk about ways you can improve your nutrition and exercise plan to meet your goal. If your goal is exercise performance, then you can talk about different ways to enhance your diet and build toward your goal.

After you complete this visit, depending on your goals, your provider will suggest the Fitness Test, which tests running, grip strength, back strength and flexibility. Or they will suggest the stress management test, for best practices at managing stress to compliment your goals.

Our next step in this series will be the Fitness test!
