Every year on Fort Stewart and Hunter Army Airfield, the 3rd Infantry Division celebrates Marne Week. This week brings together currently serving Dogface Soldiers, Veterans, Family members and the community to celebrate the division’s legacy.
Marne Week takes place Nov. 13-19 this year in commemoration of the Division’s 104th anniversary on Nov. 21. Activities will include musical events, a military ball, and team and individual sports events for units to compete in with the goal of earning bragging rights and accruing points to win the coveted Marne Cup. The week is designed to display the fighting spirit, tenacity and Warrior Ethos of the Dogface Soldier and carry on the unit’s history and legacy
The Fort Stewart Morale, Welfare and Recreation will host the kick-off concert Nov. 13 at Hunter Army Air Field which will feature Chris Janson with the Davisson Brother’s Band and Noah Hicks. Concert-goers of all ages are required to have a wristband. The concert is open to the public and free to active duty service members and their families. Veterans, retirees and Department of Defense identification cardholders are admitted for $20.
Marne Week kicks off at Fort Stewart on Nov. 15 at 6:30 a.m. with a simultaneous Division run and optional 10-miler run, beginning at the Division headquarters.
A new event this Marne week is a nod to tradition: a boxing match. While the U.S. was engaged in World War I in 1917 and 1918, training in boxing was seen as important to prepare troops for combat as well as to boost morale and provide entertainment at stateside military camps and stations.
The Marne Week boxing event will begin at 5 p.m. on Nov. 15 on Trent Field, behind the Division headquarters. Participants will spar within one of four separate weight classes on behalf of their battalions. DJ Kaos will be on hand to provide musical entertainment during the event. In case of inclement weather, the event will be held at Newman Fitness Center. Boxers interested must sign up by Nov. 4 or contact Capt. A basketball tournament will be held at Newman Fitness Center from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Nov. 16-18. Teams of five to ten Soldiers will compete in single elimination tournament games with two, 10-minute halves each.
A functional fitness competition will be held at Caro Gym, Nov. 15 from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
A four-day combatives tournament is scheduled to be held at Johnson Gym from Nov. 15-18, beginning daily at 9 a.m.
Teams of six Soldiers from participating units will pull their weight in a tug of war competition, Nov. 15 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Quick Track near Cottrell Field.
Unit teams can compete in a dodgeball tournament at the tennis courts near Newman Fitness Center, Nov. 15-16 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Teams of no less than five to six Soldiers will go head-to-head in 15-minute matches.
Donovan Field will host Marne Week’s ultimate Frisbee tournament, Nov. 15 starting at 2 p.m. and on Nov. 16 at 9 a.m., with teams of nine playing single elimination games with two, 20-minute halves.
A flag football event will take place at Sport Annex 824 near the 87th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, beginning on Nov. 15 at 10 a.m., then starting at 8 a.m. daily from Nov. 16-18. Unit teams of seven to 20 Soldiers will compete in a single game elimination tournament.
Soldiers will get down and dirty during the Marne Mudder- an obstacle course that will test each team's athleticism, endurance, tactics and knowledge, Nov. 16 from 6:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.
From Nov. 16-18, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily, battalion teams of eight to 20 can compete in a double elimination, one-pitch softball tournament on the softball fields behind Child Development Center building 475. Games will be five innings with three outs per inning.
The Marne golf scramble will take place at Taylor Creek Golf Course. Nov. 16, starting at 9 a.m. With scramble rules in place, teams will complete 18 holes with the lowest team score winning.
Teams will compete in a single-elimination soccer tournament at the Youth Sports Field beginning at 10 a.m. Nov. 15, and then at 9 a.m. on Nov. 16-17.
A volleyball tournament will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Nov. 16-17 at Caro Gym. Teams of six to ten Soldiers from participating units will play a single-elimination tournament with a score of 15 to win. Teams in the finals of the tournament will play a best-of-three game series.
The United Service Organization is sponsoring a video game tournament at the Fort Stewart USO. The gaming tournament will include 32 teams of two players playing Halo. Check-ins will be at 9 a.m. on Nov. 17.
There are several events especially designed for spouses and Family members to join in the fun and healthy competition.
The spouse’s kickball tournament kicks off at 10 a.m. on Nov. 17 at the youth baseball field near the InterContinental Hotel Group lodging. Participants will pick teams and play games of five innings, each with three outs per inning. Participants interested in representing their battalions should contact their Soldier and Family Readiness Group leaders. This event is open to all genders.
A Twilight Tattoo will take place on Cottrell Field at 5 p.m., Nov. 16. This event will start with a 30-minute concert by the 3rd ID Band. It will also include both an enlistment and reenlistment ceremony. The Twilight Tattoo serves as a musically entertaining way celebrate our Division’s proud heritage, to honor our Families, and to thank our supportive Coastal Georgia community.
Family day events will take place on Nov. 17, starting at 3:30 p.m. in the parking lot of Newman Fitness Center. Sixth Street in the vicinity of the event will be blocked off to traffic to provide room for military vehicle static displays, bounce castles, entertainment by the 3rd Infantry Division Band, and food and beverage stations provided by the United Service Organization and by unit family readiness groups.
The swimming relay will be held at Newman Fitness Center, Nov. 18 from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. This will be a single-elimination event with teams of four. Each team member will swim 50 meters.
A 5 km race will begin at 10 a.m., Nov. 18, starting at the Division Artillery motor pool.
Marne week will culminate with the 3rd ID Soldiers Ball, sponsored by the Society of the Third Infantry Division, at the Jekyll Island Convention Center. Tickets are still available at https://society3rdid.org/nov-2021-soldiers-ball.
The Armed Services YMCA will provide childcare during the ball. Spaces are limited to only 50 slots and are on a first-come, first-serve basis so parents are encouraged to make their reservations early. They accept children age six weeks to 12 years old. The many events will serve as a chance to bring Dogface Soldiers past and present, and their Families together to enjoy comradery and celebrate being members of the Rock of the Marne Division.
