Rock Island Arsenal, Ill.- With restrictions being loosened a bit this year as far as engaging in Halloween festivities, the Quad Cities community will once again be spotting little ghosts, goblins and ghouls out and about celebrating the holiday.
Here are some tips offered by health care professionals on both sides of the Mississippi River to ensure your family and friends can be safely spooky and stay healthy this Halloween.
The Halloween guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Iowa Department of Public Health encourages socially distant activities, such as carving or decorating pumpkins indoors with members of your household, or outdoors, at a safe distance, with neighbors or friends; scavenger hunt-style trick-or-treat search with your household members in, or around, your home rather than going house to house; or small group, outdoor, open-air costume parades where individuals are distanced more than six feet apart.
For those choosing to be in closer proximity to others for activities, the Illinois Department of Public Health advises first and foremost that, if you think you could have COVID-19 or have been exposed, do not participate in-person with Halloween festivities or give out candy to trick-or-treaters.
When deciding to engage in trick or treating, IDPH-Illinois encourages all participants to try to maintain six feet of social distancing and wear face coverings; consider the option of leaving individually wrapped candy on a table in driveways or in front of walkways, sidewalks or other outdoor spaces; only trick-or-treat with members of your household; and candy collected during trick-or-treating should not be eaten until after handwashing.
Both IDPH Iowa and Illinois suggest frequent use of hand sanitizer during all Halloween activities and handwashing, when possible, prior to eating or drinking, and especially after the conclusion of trick-or-treating.
The official trick-or treating hours for the Quad Cities are:
Rock Island Arsenal will hold trick-or-treating from 5 to 8 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 31.
