Members of the 928th Contracting Battalion (CBN) welcomed their new sergeant major during an assumption of responsibility ceremony on Sept. 7 at U.S. Army Garrison – Bavaria, Tower Barracks in Grafenwohr, Germany.

Sgt. Maj. Joshua T. Thompson assumed responsibility as the battalion's senior enlisted leader in a ceremony officiated by Lt. Col. Brandon M. Chapman, commander of the 928th CBN.

"This is a great day for our team, to officially welcome Sgt. Maj. Thompson to this position, but also a great day for the Thompson family. This event marks a significant milestone in Sgt. Maj. Thompson’s career. His selection and assumption of these duties are indicative of his performance; years of dedication to our profession – the Soldiers, Civilians, and Families," Chapman said in his welcoming remarks during the ceremony.

Although the assumption of responsibility officially identifies Sgt. Maj. Thompson as the 928th CBN sergeant major, he has spent countless hours leading up to this event building a command relationship with Lt. Col. Chapman and the 928th CBN Team. Thompson most recently conducted a battlefield circulation throughout the 928th CBN Area of Responsibility to gain a better appreciation for “one of the most diverse mission sets in Army Contracting," as identified by Chapman.

Thompson expressed his excitement to be part of the 928th CBN and further elaborated on the professionalism and welcoming support he witnessed during his transition into the Grafenwohr community by every member of the 928th CBN family. He thanked his children for their continued support, as well as his wife, Rebecca, for the support and foundation she provides for the Thompson family as they continue to serve.

The Philadelphia, Pennsylvania native enlisted in the Army in April 2003 as an automated logistical specialist. Thompson has served at every level of leadership with the Acquisition Corps, from team leader to senior enlisted advisor. He has accomplished all levels of the noncommissioned officer professional development system to include U.S. Army Sergeant Major Academy Class 71. He holds a Master's of Art in Procurement and Acquisition Management from Webster University.

The assumption of responsibility ceremony included the passing of the battalion colors, which symbolize the heritage and history of the organization as well as the unity and loyalty of its Soldiers. As the new battalion sergeant major, Thompson is the keeper of the colors.

The battalion also bid farewell to Sgt. Maj. Moises Gonzalez, who served as the 928th CBN previous sergeant major. Gonzalez departed the 928th CBN for Fort Campbell, Kentucky to serve as the 101st Airborne Division, G4 sergeant major.
